Travel Packing Checklist (2026)
A practical carry-on-focused checklist covering documents, electronics, toiletries, and clothing — with TSA rules and packing tips built in.
Documents & Essentials
- Passport (check expiry — many countries require 6+ months validity beyond your return date)
- Boarding passes (downloaded offline in case of poor Wi-Fi)
- Travel insurance documents and emergency contact card
- Credit cards — notify your bank before international travel
- Local currency (small amount for arrival) or a no-fee travel card
- Hotel/Airbnb confirmation and address (printed or downloaded)
- Visa documentation if required (check entry requirements before travel)
Electronics
- Phone + charger cable
- Universal travel adapter (for international trips)
- Power bank — must go in carry-on, not checked bag. Max 100Wh (27,000mAh at 3.7V) per TSA/IATA rules without airline approval
- Noise-cancelling headphones — worth it on any flight over 3 hours
- Laptop/tablet + charger (check size before buying carry-on bag)
- E-reader (saves weight vs books for long trips)
Toiletries (TSA 3-1-1 Rule)
Each liquid, gel, or aerosol must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100ml) or less, all fitting in one 1-quart clear zip-lock bag per passenger.
- Toothbrush & toothpaste (travel size)
- Deodorant (solid deodorant bypasses the 3-1-1 rule; liquid/gel must be 3.4 oz)
- Shampoo/conditioner (travel size, or buy on arrival for trips 5+ days)
- Sunscreen (liquid — must be 3.4 oz in carry-on)
- Prescription medications — keep in original labeled containers; bring doctor's note for controlled substances internationally
- Contact lenses + solution (solution counts as liquid; 3.4 oz limit)
Clothing (Carry-On Friendly)
- Pack based on the "3-4-3" rule for a week trip: 3 bottoms, 4 tops, 3 pairs of socks/underwear (plus one outfit on your body)
- Wear your heaviest/bulkiest shoes on the plane to save bag space
- Layer for the aircraft — cabins are cold at cruise altitude even in summer
- Compression packing cubes reduce volume by 20–30%
What to Leave at Home
- Full-size toiletry bottles (buy travel sizes or at destination)
- Books (bring e-reader instead)
- Hair dryer (hotels always have them)
- Excess shoes — limit to 2–3 pairs maximum
- Valuable jewelry or items you'd be devastated to lose
