Flying with a Stroller
All major US airlines allow you to gate check a stroller for free — it does not count against your checked bag allowance. This is one of the most traveler-friendly policies for families.
Gate Checking a Stroller
Gate checking means you use the stroller all the way to the aircraft door, then fold it and hand it to the gate agent just before boarding. It is returned to you at the aircraft door upon arrival at your destination — you do not need to claim it at baggage claim.
- Free on all major US airlines: Delta, United, American, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier all gate check strollers for free
- Does not count as a checked bag: Your free or paid checked bag allowance is unaffected
- No size limit: Full-size strollers, jogging strollers, and double strollers can all be gate checked
- Returned planeside: You get it back at the jet bridge upon arrival in most cases; some airports deliver to baggage claim
Checking Strollers at the Counter
You can also check a stroller at the check-in counter if you prefer not to carry it through the airport. This is also free and does not count against your checked bag allowance. However, you will not have it for the terminal walk.
- Tip: Use a stroller bag or travel bag for counter-checked strollers to protect against damage from baggage handling
- Claim at baggage carousel: Counter-checked strollers arrive at the destination baggage claim with other checked bags
Car Seats on Planes
FAA-approved car seats can be used onboard if your child has a purchased seat. All US airline car seats are free to check. FAA recommends using a car seat onboard for children under 40 lb.
- Free gate check: Car seats gate check free on all US airlines
- Must be FAA-approved: Look for the red FAA label — not all car seats are approved for aviation use
- CARES harness: An FAA-approved aviation harness alternative that fits in an overhead bin — useful for toddlers 22–44 lb
Tips for Flying with a Stroller
- Arrive early — airline staff may ask you to fold the stroller before reaching the gate
- Put your name and flight details on the stroller in case it is separated from you
- Carry a plastic bag to wrap the stroller wheels if you are gate checking a jogging stroller with dirty wheels
- Request early boarding (family boarding) — most airlines allow families with young children to board in the first group
